Repentance Psalm 51

 

1)      Introduction

 

2)      2nd Samuel 12:1-4 Interpretation of Nathan’s parable

a)      The poor man was Uriah

b)     The rich man was King David

c)      The ewe lamb was Bathsheeba

d)     Nathan’s reason for saying this parable was to get David to judge himself

 

3)      2nd Samuel 12:9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His Sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife

a)      King David lusted after Bathsheba Uriah’s wife and committed adultery with her

b)     He then sent Uriah to the front lines of the battle where he knew he would be killed

 

4)      2nd Samuel 12:13 King David’s response, I have sinned against the Lord!

a)      David covered up his sin for nearly a year

 

5)      2nd Samuel 12:14 However because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die

a)      David and others paid a serious price for his sin

 

6)      Psalm 51

a)      Verse 1 Be gracious to me O God according to your loving kindness according to the greatness of your compassion blot out my transgressions

b)     Loving kindness unfailing love steadfast love speaks of God’s loyalty to us

c)      Blot out  = to destroy so that it no longer exists

d)     Transgression = rebellion

 

e)      Verse 2-3 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions and my sin is every before me

i)        What dirt is to the body sin is to our soul

ii)      David defeated Goliath

iii)    David became King of Israel

iv)    Wrote some of the most recognizable passages of Scripture, The Lord is my shepherd

v)      He did not try to balance his evil deeds with his good deeds

vi)    Admit your sin don’t rationalize it

 

f)       Verse 4 Against the only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that You are justified when you speak and blameless when You judge

i)        Sin is against God

ii)      What ever you decide about me is fair

 

g)      Verse 5 Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin my mother conceived my

i)        To be conceived in sin means that we inherited the SIN NATURE from our ancestor Adam

ii)      David was king but in God’s eyes he was the same as everyone else a sinner

iii)    This has nothing to do with giving birth or the act of conceiving a child

 

h)     Verse 6 Behold you desire TRUTH in the innermost being and in the hidden part thou wilt make me know WISDOM

i)        God desires truth  = He wants us to be faithful and trust worthy toward Him

ii)      Key to repentance know truth and apply it  = wisdom

 

i)        Verse 7 Purify me with hyssop and I shall be clean wash me and I shall be whiter than snow

i)        When a leper was healed a priest would ceremonially cleans him by dipping a branch of hyssop in water or the blood of a sacrifice. The priest would sprinkle the blood on the leper

ii)      David knew that there was forgiveness in a blood sacrifice

iii)    With out the blood sacrifice of Jesus there would be no forgiveness of sins

iv)    Whiter than snow = innocent

 

j)       Verse 10 Create in me a clean heart O God and RENEW a steadfast spirit with in

i)        Sin is a heart problem solve your issues

 

k)     Verse 11 Do not cast me away from thy presence and do not take thy Holy Spirit from me

i)        David saw the presence of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit depart from Saul

ii)      God’s presence in your life is more important than anything else

iii)    Sin grieves the Holy Spirit and causes Him to leave

 

l)        Verse 12 Restore to me the joy of they salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit

i)        Sin made David sad

ii)      Sin had made David weak

 

m)   Verse 13 “Then I will teach transgressors your ways and sinners will be converted to yo

i)        Fruit and good works follow repentance

           

n)     Verse 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.  A broken and a contrite heart these O God you will not despise. 

i)        Contrite = ground to pieces deeply remorseful for sins committed

ii)      David was wealthy enough to bring many sacrifices

iii)    Being broken is more important to God than offerings
