1 Corinthians 14

 

 

Verse 1 - Paul says to do 2 things:  PURSUE AND DESIRE

Pursue- means to follow with persistence and zeal; to be consistent; to desire with intensity to run after

 

 

Desire – means to have an overwhelming compulsion; to burn with fire; a boiling passionate zeal; to have a warm feeling for; to want something badly

 

 

Verse 2 This is a believer

Any believer- Acts 2:17-18

For today- Mal 3:6

Jesus baptized you Matt 3:11

Doesn’t save you

Acts 2:21

It is your spirit man who prays

 

 

Verse 3 – the spirituals are only to edify –

Matthew 16:18- “I will build” my church

Edification – means to erect; strengthen (a construction term)

Exhort – means to call nearer to God; to encourage

Comfort – means to console during a time of distress, sorrow, persecution and suffering

 

 

Verse 4 – tongues – when a person speaks in tongues they edify themselves

with an interpretation the entire church is edified

 

 

Verse 5

Paul wants everyone to speak in tongues

God wants everyone to speak in tongues – Acts 2:38-39

Paul wants everyone to prophesy also

 

 

Tongues + Interpretation of Tongues = Prophecy

 

Verse 6-12 – 4 examples of things that would be useless unless people could understand them

Verse 6  teaching

Verse 7  musical instruments

Verse 8  military trumpet

Verses 9-11  the human tongue

 

 

Verse 13- This is public tongues & not personal tongues

1 Corinthians 12:8-11

Tongues needs an interpretation so that everyone knows what is being said

Verse 14- My Spirit prays

Understanding- I don’t know what I am saying

Verse 15- Pray in your native tongue and supernatural tongue

 

 

Verse 16-17- If you just speak in tongues, no one will be able to understand you

Verse 18- Paul was grateful he spoke with tongues more than the Corinthians

Verse 19- Unless there is an interpretation
